Congratulations to Diana Nelson, PA-C, Gundersen Harmony Clinic, for being chosen as the Preceptor of the Year of the UW-La Crosse/Gundersen/Mayo Physician Assistant (PA) Program.

Students in the PA Program complete their clinical rotations at Gundersen Health System and Mayo Clinic Health System. Each year, they are asked to nominate one preceptor and one instructor from each health system who they feel deserves extra recognition for their efforts. Diana has been a preceptor of the UW-La Crosse/Gundersen/Mayo PA program for 10 of her 13 years at Gundersen.

As a former dental laboratory instructor and coordinator for the PA program in the U.S. Air Force, Diana says being a preceptor comes naturally. “I love interacting with the students and teaching various skills. It is a joy to watch them progress over the course of the month they spend at our Gundersen Harmony Clinic. They learn to go through an entire appointment from history to writing notes. Of course, I learn so much from the students too,” she says.

PA student Sarah Glazer who nominated Diana for the award says, “Diana is an amazingly compassionate and competent provider who goes above and beyond when it comes to teaching. She never hesitated to take extra time to explain something or allow me to ‘take the lead’ with a patient, no matter how busy the clinic was. I came away from my family medicine rotation with a great approach to developing a differential for acute complaints, and was more confident in my physical exam skills and ability to read X-rays.”

“I was not particularly surprised to learn that Diana was named preceptor of the year,” shares medical staff colleague Randi Berg, MD, Gundersen Harmony Clinic. “Diana has been a tireless advocate for her PA students, working hard to make sure that they have consistently good learning experiences in our clinic. She is patient, kind and welcoming, and provides a wonderful model of top-notch clinical care. She is so deserving of this award.”

Diana was recognized at the PA Certificate Award Dinner held earlier this month at the La Crosse Center.
