Female landowners in Fillmore County are invited to attend a Women Caring for the Land workshop on June 19 at the Lanesboro Community Center, 202 Parkway Avenue S., Lanesboro, MN. These workshops are free for women to attend. The workshop starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. and includes an informational morning session followed by lunch (provided) and a bus tour of area conservation practices in action, including a demonstration of soil testing.

Women own an increasing percentage of Midwest farmland – up to 47 percent in some states. Women Caring for the Land is an innovative program facilitated by Renewing the Countryside and the Women, Food & Agriculture Network (WFAN) to support women landowners in learning about conservation practices and building local connections. The workshops offer a peer-to-peer, informal discussion format to allow women landowners to talk about their individual farm management goals, facilitated by women conservationists.

Maintaining healthy soil is the key to productivity and environmental health for our farmland. At this meeting participants will learn how to assess and improve the health of their soils through practices such as cover crops, no-till and strip-till, and other conservation practices. A soil testing demonstration will measure soil structure and stability and infiltration. (Participants will walk a short distance into a field, so appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn or brought along.) The participants will also learn about resource providers and funding available to help reach conservation goals.

Pre-registration is required for meal planning, and space is limited. To register, or for more information, call Donna Rasmussen at the Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation office at 507-765-3878 ext. 3 or email donna.rasmussen@fillmoreswcd.org. Registration deadline is Monday, June 16, 2014. This program is made possible with funding from a Conservation Innovation Grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
