To quote and old TV show, "I love it when a plan comes together!"
It just keeps getting better! I might be talking about the beautiful weather we had last Tuesday during the fourth grade Farm Safety Day Camp at the Mabel Steam Engine Grounds, or the enthusiasm of the students, or the excellent response I received from teachers about the presentations. It takes a lot of community support to make an event like this possible!
And now, these are the people I would like to thank!
The 393 students, their teachers, and chaperones from 12 schools, the fourth grade classes from Fillmore Central, Houston, Rushford-Peterson, Lanesboro, St. John's Wykoff, St. John's Caledonia, St. Mary's Caledonia, Chatfield, Mabel-Canton, Spring Grove, La Crescent, Crucifixion La Crescent, and fourteen independent students. The city of Mabel provided much needed support from the EMT ambulance crew, fire department, and use of the Steam Engine Grounds. Plus, the Hesper-Mabel Historical Old Barn is a great place to serve lunch.
T-shirts sponsors were GenerationX Construction and the Lanesboro Sales Commission. Cash sponsors include: Bloomfield Mutual Insurance Company, Spring Valley; Ace Telephone Association, Houston; Sno Pac Foods, Inc., Caledonia; Gehling Implement & Auction Company, Inc., Preston; Kraus Oil & Country Store, Spring Grove & Caledonia; Hammell Equipment, Inc., Eitzen; Hammell Equipment, Inc., Chatfield; First Southeast Bank, Harmony; Shooting Star Native Seeds, Inc., Spring Grove; Ostrander Farmers Coop; Houston County DHIA; Fillmore County ADA; Bank of the West-Caledonia & Mabel; Houston County ADA; Buster's Country Meats; Eastwood Bank, Rochester; Chosen Valley Veterinary Clinic; Legion Post #191, Caledonia; Root River State Bank, Chatfield; AgStar Financial Services, Rochester; Southern MN Initiative Foundation; American Family Insurance, Preston; Caledonia Haulers, Inc.; Eitzen State Bank & Staggemeyer Insurance & Wagner Insurance, Eitzen; Franciscan Skemp; Hoff Funeral Home, Rushford; Kiehne Insurance, Preston; Morem Electric, Harmony; Mound Prairie Mutual Insurance Co., Houston; Portland Prairie Embryo Services, Caledonia; Preble Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Lanesboro; Security State Bank, Spring Valley, Wykoff, Ostrander, Lewiston; Bluff Country Meats, Eitzen, Caledonia; and Fountain Building Center, Inc.
Preston Equipment Co. provided tractor, spreader, and lawn mowers and Kingsley Mercantile, Harmony provided push lawn mowers. Neil Storlie of Storlie's Portable Pit Stops, Spring Grove, provided port-a-potties.
Those helping with planning included Fillmore/Houston County Extension, Jerrold Tesmer; Houston County Farm Bureau, Germaine Davison; Fillmore County Farm Bureau, Scott Winslow; Houston County Public Health, Heather Myhre; Fillmore County Public Health, Brenda Pohlman; Mabel-Canton FFA Advisor Dennis Rud, and concerned citizen, Richard O'Connor.
The volunteer presenters are the people who really make this possible, listed by topic and the organization they represent are: Electric Safety, Tri-County Electric, Brad Pecinovsky; PTO Safety, Fillmore/Houston Extension, Jerrold Tesmer; Mabel Ambulance, Mabel EMT, Lizz Folstad, Stephanie Folstad, Sarah Delaney; Lawn Mower Safety, Fillmore Extension, LeeAnn Howard and Houston Extension, Kelly Wilkins; ATV Safety, Emily Clobes, John Clobes, John Clobes, Jr.; Grain Drowning, Fillmore Farm Bureau, Scott Winslow, Katie Winslow, Jeff Eickhoff; General Farm Safety, Doug Lind, Kristi Ruen, Chris Troendle; Tractor Rollover, Houston Farm Bureau, Germaine Davison, Cynthie Washburn; Livestock Safety, Harmony Vet Clinic, Dr. Lynn Aggen, and Miller Angus, Chris Miller; Sun Safety, Caledonia FFA students Chris Dvorak, Adam Hevelein, Elliot Breeser; 911 Simulator/Seat Belt, Fillmore Public Health, Brenda Pohlman, and Fillmore County Sheriff's Office, Mike Ask; Basic First Aid, Chatfield Ambulance EMT, Sue Kester; and Fire Safety, Mabel Fire Department, Joel Graves.
The Mabel-Canton FFA members assisted presenters, helped with set-up, clean-up, and provided much of the needed logistical support and muscle: Travis Selness, Derek Curtis, Sterling Kolka, Ryan Halverson, Gabe Lind, Megan Witt, Logan Henry, Stephanie Hafner, Kristina Mengis, Christy Welscher, Morgan Roppe, Justin Ward, Mason Henry, Abby Hanson, Steve Smith, and Tyler Myhre. The Spring Grove FFA provided group leaders: Emily Howard, Brooke Johnson, Derek Johnson, Nick Wiste, Levi Hermanson, Taylor Borreson, Kyle Sylling, Brandon Schuttemeier, Kyle Lee, Josh Olerud, Rachel Wiste, Matt Happel, Nathan Borreson, and Evan Howard. Special thanks to their respective FFA Advisors Dennis Rud, Brad Harguth, and Karen Tisthammer.
The commodity group providing lunch this year was the Fillmore County Pork Producers. The pork loin sandwiches were prepared by Craig Mensink, Mark Sikkink, and Paul Schmidt, with Kristi Ruesink helping serve. Other organizations providing food included Kwik Trip-bananas; Houston DHIA, Houston ADA, and the Fillmore ADA-Milk; Rushford, Harmony, Preston Foods provided the chips.
Each year I have the fear I will forget to mention someone, because everyone was important in making Farm Safety Day Camp possible!
