ROCHESTER, Minn. – In one week, motorists will encounter a temporary three-day detour on Highway 52 at 55th Street Northwest in Rochester as demolition work takes place on the bridge over the highway, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

At 9 p.m., Friday, May 2, 55th Street Northwest will be closed at Highway 52. No traffic will be allowed to cross the highway or turn onto the highway. Then at 10 p.m., Highway 52 will be closed in both directions. The closure could be in effect through 6 a.m., Monday, May 5, however, if construction crews are able to open the roadways sooner, they will do so.

55th Street NW traffic will be detoured to 41st Street NW and the east and west frontage roads to reach local destinations.

Northbound and southbound Highway 52 traffic will be routed up and down the ramps at 55th Street. Traffic signals at the ramps will be kept green to improve traffic flow. Traffic signals along the detour routes will also be adjusted for timing to reflect the changes in traffic.

The closure is necessary for motorist and construction crew safety while a portion of the southbound side of the bridge that spans Highway 52 is removed.

Reconstruction of the Highway 52 bridge at 55th Street NW began April 14. Work includes the widening of the bridge to the south and reconstruction of the outside lanes of 55th Street from the West Frontage Road of Highway 52 to Bandel Road on the east side. The improvements are being made to improve traffic flow on 55th Street and the Highway 52 ramps.

The $4.7 million city of Rochester project is being done through joint cooperation between the city, Olmsted County and MnDOT. Work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2014.

Look for updates from the city of Rochester, as well as MnDOT in the next week as reminders prior to the demolition work.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
