He has been a familiar, caring face in southeast Minnesota for the past 23 years, and after 30 years of caring for patients, Glenn McCarty, DO, Family Medicine, Gundersen Lutheran - Harmony Clinic, is retiring on May 31 and will begin the next chapter of his life. Dr. McCarty began his medical career in his hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, and then came to Spring Grove in 1981. He was there until 2007 when he transferred to the Gundersen Lutheran - Harmony Clinic.

Having seen hundreds, if not thousands, of patients over the years, most of them will tell you that the two things they enjoyed most about him is his sense of humor and willingness to listen. "Dr. McCarty has always been willing to take the time needed to sit and listen to patients' concerns, whether they were health-related or not," says Teresa Coyle, Gundersen Lutheran - Harmony Clinic.

As is the case with anyone who cares for patients for 30 years, Dr. McCarty has many experiences that he will always remember. "There was an emergency on a farm and the ambulance was called. The ambulance crew and I drove out to the farm and found the farmer had fallen out of the hay loft into the manure spreader," Dr. McCarty recalls. "In order for me to assess the patient before transferring him to the ambulance, I had to get into the manure spreader. That was the moment I realized the true meaning of rural practice."

After he retires on May 31, Dr. McCarty and his wife, Gloria, are moving back to his home state of Texas to reconnect with family. His future plans include taking some college courses to learn Spanish and history as well as traveling with his wife. He eventually hopes to volunteer in an outpatient medical clinic setting.

Come help celebrate Dr. McCarty's retirement by attending an Open House on Thursday, May 27, from 1-2 p.m. at the Gundersen Lutheran - Harmony Clinic/Harmony Healthcare facility. Everyone is welcome to stop in and say good-bye to Dr. McCarty and share some of your favorite memories of him from over the years.
