Michael Callanan, Cytopathology Laboratory, recently received a surprise visit from John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic. Callanan, a cytology specialist who works on Hilton 10 in the Cytopathology Lab, was the 1,000th employee to achieve Bronze-level certification in the Mayo Quality Fellows program.

While colleagues looked on, Dr. Noseworthy presented Callanan with a framed certificate to commemorate this milestone. "I want to congratulate you and the work that you and many others do," Dr. Noseworthy said. "You are among our employees who have demonstrated proficiency in understanding Quality and Quality improvement. Our Quality efforts are extraordinarily important to Mayo."

Representing the Quality Academy were Doug Wood, M.D., medical director; Martha McClees, administrator; Jeff Leland, operations manager; and Gina Anderson, education services coordinator, Mayo Quality Fellows program. Angela Sorenson, Callanan's supervisor, says Callanan has used his Quality skills to create graphs and charts that help the lab provide quality patient results. "He prides himself on doing what is right for the patient and has great passion for his work," Sorenson says.

The Mayo Quality Fellows program was developed to incorporate continuous Quality improvement competencies into Mayo Clinic's culture. All employees are encouraged to seek certification as Mayo Quality Fellows to implement sustainable Quality improvement.
