Minar O. Therneau, age 88, of Spring Valley, Minn. died Saturday April 19, 2014 at his home.

Minar Otis Therneau was born on June 1, 1925, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Otis and Emily (Bussell) Therneau. He lived with his parents and his brother Glode on their ranch located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains until the age of 2. They then moved to Grand Meadow, Minn., and settled on his mother’s family farm. He was a part of the local Methodist church from his youth, baptized by Rev. L. D. Williams and confirmed by Rev. Stanley Williams. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1943 and continued to farm with his father and brother. He married Dorothea L Curtis on March 1, 1952, and they lived in Grand Meadow until purchasing a larger farm in Spring Valley in 1963. He was a scout leader, and served in many positions in the Methodist Church in both Grand Meadow and Spring Valley. He was a fifty-plus year member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to music on his reel-to-reel, and was an avid letter writer to family and friends. He also loved discovering the many different ways to drive to Whitewater State Park for family picnics. As he once said - My love for the land and the earth cannot be adequately expressed - it has always been there as a young child and has never left me - which is why he was close to the land his entire life. He was a farmer for more than 50 years. Even after retiring- he still enjoyed the drives to look at crops and motoring his wheelchair down the road to visit neighbors. He lived a full and productive life and will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothea; two sons, Terry (Carol) of Rochester, Minn. and Kirk of Spring Valley; four daughters, Judith Hall of Hudson, Wis., Patti (Michael) Anderson of Clear Lake, Iowa, Karen (Reed) Oeltjen of Ellsworth, Wis., and Tracy (Sergio) Guaman of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 4 great- grandchildren, and 6 step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, his brother, one son-in-law, and daughters Tricia Jo, Jill, and Debbie.

Memorial services for Minar O. Therneau will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday April 25, 2014 at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev Beth Perez officiating. Burial will take place in the Grand Meadow Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley and will continue for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
