Visitors to Lanesboro on Memorial Day have a chance of catching a highly contagious fever going around, one that hasn't gotten much coverage by the news media.
The culprit is called Honor Flight Fever. The people who are most highly susceptible to catching it are the ones who come into contact with World War II veterans who have traveled on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC, to visit the WWII Memorial. It can also be caught from volunteer guardians who have traveled along with the veterans on those flights, who are also guaranteed to have it! The only symptom: an extreme enthusiasm for supporting Honor Flights. Those are the all-volunteer flights which take our WWII veterans-for free-to Washington as a thank you for being part of "The Greatest Generation."
There will be a fairly large concentration of both kinds of "fever carriers" at the Lanesboro War Memorial Community Center on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. The first opportunity for contact is by eating at the Honor Flight Fundraiser Breakfast on the lower level of the center, starting at 7 a.m. The menu will be French toast, sausages, orange juice, coffee, and milk, all for $5 per person, or a home-baked muffin and beverage for $2 per person. There will also be a home-baked goodies sale during the breakfast hours. All proceeds go to Southeast Minnesota Honor Flights and will help to pay for the next Honor Flight leaving from Rochester in October.
Another opportunity to catch the fever will be at the annual traditional Memorial Day service, on the main level of the same building, starting at 10:00 a.m. A short parade proceeds from the school down Parkway Avenue to the center at 9:45 a.m. to get the program started. The service includes music, special speakers, and an honor guard rifle salute and taps.
There will be an Honor Flight display complete with pictures and other information: everything you ever wanted to know about Honor Flights!
Late sleepers who may have missed an early breakfast can still eat, as it will be served from 7 a.m. until 12 noon.
The event is sponsored by the Lanesboro American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary with supplemental funds from East Fillmore Chapter of Thrivent. Everyone is welcome. Questions? Call Mary Stream at 507-467-3457.
