In 2001, April was first observed nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and the color teal was chosen as the official color in representing sexual violence awareness and prevention. In communities all over the United States, advocacy programs are making a concerted effort during April by planning activities that will bring awareness and assist in the prevention of sexual violence. Sexual violence is 100% preventable.

Statistics show that every two minutes, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted and that 44 percent of victims are under the age of 18. Together we have the power to change those statistics and together we can take a stand to end sexual violence.

To honor the victims of sexual violence, DFO Victim Services and Fillmore Family Advocates, with the support of our area city councils, have hung teal ribbons in nearly every town within Fillmore County as a visual reminder of SAAM.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted or would like to talk with someone, please contact DFO Victim Services at 507-765-2805 or our 24 hour crisis line at 1-877-289-0636.
