Spring Cover Crop Field Day April 17 near Preston

Fri, Apr 11th, 2014
Posted in All Agriculture

The benefits of cover crops are becoming more apparent as more farmers use them. A field day will be held Thursday, April 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Josh Simon farm south of Preston to discuss these many benefits. The cover crop field day is located 8 miles south of Preston on County Road 17 (watch for signs). The event is free of charge, and no pre-registration is required.

Winter rye was blown on with the fall application of potash and phosphorus and then worked it in with a Turbo-Till disk. Dean Thomas and Josh Simon will talk about the benefits of cover crops and how to manage them before the next crop. Jessica Bronson, Fillmore County NRCS District Conservationist, will talk about different financial assistance programs for cover crops. Funding to support this event is provided by the National Wildlife Federation Cover Crop Champion Grant in cooperation with the Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation District and University of Minnesota Extension. Contact Dean Thomas at the Fillmore SWCD office for more information (507)765-3878 ext. 3, or email
