Verdon Flattum

Verdon Flattum was born on March 18, 1935 in Lanesboro, Minn. to Gynther and Lillian Flattum. He attended Lanesboro Schools where he played tenor sax and the clarinet graduating in 1952. He enrolled in the Army where he played in the Army Band. Verdon married Karlene Anderson in Chatfield, Minn. in 1961, they moved to California and had one son, Stuart and later divorced.

Verdon returned to Minnesota and attended Mankato State University where he played in the Mankato State Band and received his Bachelors Degree in Library Science. Verdon also received his Masters Degree in Library Science from USC in Los Angeles. Verdon was a professional musician and played with many jazz bands in Los Angeles and Palm Desert until ill health in 2009. Verdon married Marlene Raner Kirkham in Los Angeles on April 27, 1974. Marlene accompanied Verdon to his many gigs.

Verdon is survived by his wife Marlene, two stepchildren, his son, five grandchildren and his brother Darrel (Karen) Flattum of Rochester, Minn. and nieces Tamera Mensink, Pam Flattum, Vicki Darling and nephew Mitchell Flattum. His parents and two grandchildren preceded him in death. His body was cremated.

A jazz Celebration of Life will be held for Verdon Flattum at the Palm Desert Greens Country Club in Palm Desert, California on April 26, 2014 from 4 pm to 10 pm.
