DECORAH, Iowa — Free First Thursday on March 6 is a great time to see what’s new at Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center. The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with free admission all day.

At 1:00 p.m. there will be a gallery talk in the exhibition “Four from the North” and from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. there will be origami flower making in the exhibition “Flora Metamorphicae.” Visitors can learn about Vesterheim's Folk Art School and take home a catalog of 2014 classes.

“Four from the North” is a special exhibition of recent works by four Duluth-area artists: Alison Aune, Ann Jenkins, Ann Klefstad, and Arna Rennan. Their artworks reflect a deep respect and love for the natural world and the ways in which natural motifs have created the traditional patterns of Norway and Minnesota.

“Flora Metamorphicae” brings spring to Decorah with thousands of beautiful and colorful ceramic flowers artfully configured especially for exhibition at Vesterheim. It is a remarkable project created by six contemporary Norwegian artists—Kari Aasen, Lipa Dalén, Siri Haaskjkold, Bjørg Hougen, Audhild Rypdal, and Eli Veim.

Check vesterheim.org for a schedule of future “Free First Thursday” events and all of the 2014 folk-art class descriptions.
