Late season, inter-conference, intra-sectional games, like that between Fillmore Central and Mabel-Canton, have huge repercussions on the post-season seeding process. The Falcons (6-11, 9-12), who already own a victory over SEC 2nd place Spring Grove, and a close loss to SEC first place Lyle/Pacelli, took a big step toward a higher seed (#2?) by downing SEC third place Mabel-Canton (10-3, 11-7). They did so with defense. It didn’t start right way. FC threw a full-court press at the Cougars in the opening three minutes, and M-C broke it for four easy field goals. The Falcons then fell back and went with a strong half-court man-to-man. Falcon defenders were consistently in the grills of Cougar shooters/scorers. M-C managed just five field goals over the next fifteen minutes. In the last three minutes of the half, FC took control. Five different Falcons scored in an 11-2 run that made the halftime score 29-18. The Falcon lead would stay in double digits the rest of the way. They held M-C without a field goal for an 8-minute stretch of the second half to build a 20-point lead. They held M-C to just 28 points, and Cougar leading scorer Lydia Geving to 2 points, thru 32 minutes of action. FC prevailed 53-38. Junior G Morgan Malley (11 pts) and frosh G Tayah Barnes (11 pts, 3-5 three’s), who provided a big offensive spark off the bench, led the Falcons offensively. Leah Scheevel had 6 (pts) and 12 (rebs), Sammi Bakke 8 (pts), 7 rebs, and 4 (stls). The Cougars, who entered having gotten four players in double figures in back-to-back games, got zero to ten. Sara Lind had 9 (pts) and 13 (rebs), Geving 9 (pts) and 5 (rebs), and Hannah Nolte 8 (pts). FC out-rebounded M-C 49-31. M-C struggled to hold FC to one shot. The Falcons tallied 17 second-chance-points (8 of 21 FG’s came that way). The Cougars, who usually do a good job of scavenging opposing ball-handlers, had just six steals.
