The newest, and what I consider a very interesting test plot, is a Nitrogen Credit study when a field is in an Alfalfa-Corn rotation. This plot will look deeper at the question of nitrogen credits following alfalfa. It is looking at fall versus spring tillage, leaving or harvesting alfalfa re-growth, and hopefully answers questions about the current 150 pound nitrogen credit when a good stand of alfalfa exists.
On June 28 there will be an On-Farm Field Day: Agronomic Management for Alfalfa-Corn Rotations 1:00pm-3:00pm (registration from 12:30-1:00) at the site located ½ mile north off the intersection of Hwy 30 and Hwy 11, located east of Chatfield, MN.

The Corn Silage Varietal Trial near La Crescent is part of the larger University of Minnesota Extension and University Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca's ongoing varietal study for corn silage in southern Minnesota.
Associated with the Corn Silage Plot is a joint project with the University of Wisconsin Extension, Corn Silage Foliar Fungicide Research Trial. Houston County's former Extension Educator, Bill Halfman, made arrangements for this plot. They are looking at two varieties of corn and applying three foliar fungicides treatments to see if there is a response; this is the second year of the study.
Of interest to many farmers and agronomists is the Crops Day July 8th in Rochester. It highlights a number of research studies taking place in southeastern Minnesota. The Extension Regional Office - Rochester - has a series of tests just east of the RCTC campus. There are traditional herbicide trials, a corn planting date study, oats fungicide plots, and a plot simulated drift injury on soybeans. The corn planting date study had five plantings a week apart starting April 9th. After frost damage, three were replanted. Watch for more details of Crops Day closer to the event.
Crop Alert: After the windy days we had this past week, it might be wise to start scouting for Potato Leafhopper in the alfalfa. With much of the first cutting off the fields, second crop re-growth might be affected if Potato Leafhopper is present. A little time with a sweep net, might pay big dividends.
