Wetland mitigation workshop

Posted in All Agriculture

Farmers and agricultural land owners can gain a better understanding of the wetland mitigation process and their options by attending a 2 hour workshop on Wednesday, February 5 or Thursday, February 6.

The February 5 workshop is at Cabela’s in Owatonna, at 10 a.m. The session is free.

The objective of the meeting is to provide farmers with information to make decisions regarding drainage projects needing mitigation. They will also gain knowledge of the key factors involved in wetland mitigation.

Under both federal and Minnesota laws, farmers are required to mitigate for both functions and acres of any protected wetland they want to drain.

The program will be presented by Sid Cornelius, Environmental Specialist, and retired employee of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), with over 18 years of wetland experience.

The mitigation process can be complicated. However, understanding the basics and options available should help farmers work through the mitigation process with better results.
