Lanesboro's own Rhubarb Sisters will perform "in 3-D" at the St. Mane Theatre in Lanesboro, Minn. on Saturday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. "Happiness in Your Own Backyard through Poetry, Song and General Merriment" will feature the Rhubarb Sisters (Julie Kiehne, Peggy Hanson, Beth Hennessy & Robin Scheu) and also the Bethlehem Boyz (Brett Clarke, Dave Ruen, Robin Krom & Tim Kiehne), Barbara Benson Keith, Tom Schramm and Walter Bradley.
The performance will take place in two acts: "Welcome to Lanesboro, The Rhubarb Capitol of Minnesota" and "Happiness in Your Own Backyard." The evening is sure to bring laughter at the song parodies, pleasant thoughts about rhubarb, and that warm comfortable feeling you get when listening to much-loved familiar tunes. The Rhubarb Sisters will perform a variety of rhubarb parodies: What Shall We Do With the Extra Rhubarb (to the tune of . . . Drunken Sailor), Down By the River to Pray, Bee-Bop-a-Ree-Bop Rhubarb Pie, Dwelling in Rhubarbland, Softly and Tenderly Rhubarb is Stewing, Beautiful Rhubarb (to the tune of Beautiful Savior). The Bethlehem Boyz will perform Sweet and Tangy (aka Sweet and Lovely), My Wide Rhubarb Leaf (aka My Wild Irish Rose) among other songs. There will also be solos by Barbara Benson Keith and the individual Rhubarb Sisters, a piece featuring body percussion, an operetta parody on "Neopolitan Love Song," traditional tunes sung by Tom Schramm (guitar) and Walter Bradley (mandolin), and poetry readings interspersed throughout the evening.
The "Happiness in Your Own Backyard" performance is in conjunction with the Rhubarb Festival, held in Lanesboro's Sylvan Park on Saturday, June 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The festival features a farmer's market, live entertainment-including the Rhubarb Sisters, a juggler using flaming rhubarb, a kids concert, rhubarb tasting, a Kids Create! Family Rhub-ART booth by the Lanesboro Arts Center, bake sales, a rhubarb contest, and a rhubarb reading run. KTTC's Tom Overlie and Jess Abrahamson will be there for the start of the Rhubarb Olympics at 10:30 a.m. For more information: www.rhubarbfestival.org.
Tickets for "Happiness in Your Own Backyard" are $12 / $10 arts center members. Tickets are available in advance at the Arts Center galleries at 103 Parkway Ave N in Lanesboro (open Mon-Thurs 10-5, Fri-Sat 10-7, and Sun 11-3), and at the door one hour prior to the performance at the St. Mane Theatre, 206 Parkway Ave. N. in Lanesboro. Proceeds benefit the renovation and revitalization of the St. Mane Theatre and is presented by the Lanesboro Arts Center, whose mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
