Wednesday afternoons in Lanesboro the local farmer's market honors and caters to local trade. "We set up a special preview market every Wednesday from June through September to make it easy for area residents to shop, visit and avoid the Saturday crowd," explained market manager Jerilyn Eddy. Those who come will find fresh, in-season produce, prepared foods and plants from a membership of dedicated local gardeners who put all their energy into producing the basics that can help us all improve what we eat.

The Wednesday Market kick-off this year will feature the Rhubarb Sisters as they warm up for their signature gig at the Rhubarb Festival the following Saturday, June 5. "A more fun, more festive, more involving local market is our goal for Wednesdays this year," says Eddy.

"We want the market to be a place where people have fun and learn from one another," says Eddy, who would like to personally invite local artisans, growers, musicians and cooks in the area to use the Wednesday 4 to 6 pm time slot to promote their craft, product line or food-producing technique. "Stage a trunk show, teach a mini-lesson, invent an activity for kids, share knowledge on a subject you know that others may not, hand out coupons or cards that will send customers your way." Eddy also suggests, "Lanesboro Local members are invited to showcase products that are sold up the street at their Marketplace or at the artist's home store." The demonstration-only offer is open to anyone from the SE Minnesota area. You need not be a member of the Farmer's Market.

What can local customers expect to bring home from the Wednesday market opener? The first thing is a great feeling -- for having supported neighbors who grow and share their food. "Also a sense of supporting the future of our town and this county," Eddy emphasizes. "The statistics are astonishing -- if we residents purchased just 15 percent of our food from local sources, it would make a night-and-day difference to the future economic health and viability of this area for our grandchildren."

The products on Wednesdays: local meats, eggs and baked goods. Locally grown garden plants, annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees, too. Pasture-raised meats by Tom and Sara Austin of Hilltop Pastures Family Farm will be featured opening day and most Wednesdays all summer.

"Please join us!" - this year's roster of Lanesboro Farmer's Market members invite you to make a short Wednesday afternoon stop part of your food shopping and social time each week. If you can, volunteer to help with a promotional task or two. Help make Farmer's Market an experience that continues to get better and better as the season goes on.
