The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day. This year, World Habitat Day will be celebrated on October 7th, 2013. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. To find out more, visit www.unhabitat.org.

Habitat
for Humanity-Winona County built its first home in Winona County in 1994. Since then, 48 homes have been built. In addition to the 26 homes within the city of Winona, Habitat has built homes in Lewiston, Utica, Harmony, St. Charles, Minnesota City, Altura, Stockton and Rushford. Habitat is currently focusing on their “A Brush With Kindness” Program. “A Brush With Kindness” allows Habitat for Humanity to positively impact families by making renovations to existing homes for families who do not have the financial means to complete the work themselves. These renovations vary from constructing handicapped accessible entrances to replacing deteriorated windows or repainting the exterior of a home. All of these renovations benefit the homeowner by providing hope for an improved quality of life. “A Brush With Kindness” allows volunteer groups to positively impact a neighborhood and their results are almost immediate.
