People who sing the patriotic song, "America the Beautiful," with its references to "purple mountain majesty" and fruitful plains, may be missing the point. Although the song speaks of God, many who sing the song focus their attention on the natural wonders. While summer plans might include enjoying the gift of a beautiful environment, the Giver of the gift may be forgotten. The growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has given a new meaning to "shining sea." People expected a giant corporation or the government to control the menace and clean up the mess so that we could get back to normal. The ecological damage continues and seems to be growing. Who can clean up a mess of this magnitude?
God has been cleaning up human messes ever since humans first sinned. God cleaned up the moral filth of the early earth with a worldwide flood that created a new world with mountain chains, lakes and a new ecology. Knowing that humans could not pay the price needed to clean up after their own sins, God sent Jesus to take away the sin of the world. Cleaning up the world once and for all, God has promised a "new heaven and a new earth."
God knows the solution to the oil spill. God knows the solution to everything. It is time to turn to the Maker for the problems too big for us to handle. See you in church!
