Lanesboro man accused of unauthorized practice of law

To the Editor,

The unsigned article on Page 21, of your September 2 edition, entitled “Lanesboro man accused of unauthorized practice of law” is a good example of why newspaper articles are generally regarded as hearsay in American courts of law. The article seeks to impugn the integrity of Mr. David Williams, Jr., a member of the Board of Directors of the National Trout Center, and an untiring spokesman on behalf of environmental issues in southeastern Minnesota. By allusion and innuendo the article invokes visions of the prodigal son of an illustrious jurist, accumulating numerous legal indignities over the past 45 years, finally culminating in three recent charges in Fillmore County Court.

Nowhere in the article is the accuser identified. Nowhere is revealed a shred of evidence to substantiate the claim of “unauthorized practice of law.” Intellectual lassitude alone, abetted by a plethora of grammatical errors, cannot account for the calculated character assassination rendered by this article. For the record, a simple phone call to the Chairman of the Board of the National Trout Center would have revealed that David Williams, Jr., has never been asked to provide legal services for the National Trout Center, and he has never acted in any capacity other than that of an unpaid volunteer on our Board of Directors.

It has often been said that freedom of the press belongs to those who own one. Surely your readers deserve to know that the Fillmore County Journal will not abuse that right.
