The decision by the city of Canton to retain ownership of the town liquor store, and the plan to close the business, liquidate the remaining inventory, and renovate the structure for future town use, was discussed at the City Council meeting on August 14th. The remaining wine and spirit inventory that remains after the store’s last day of business on October 31st can be sold to qualified buyers holding a current liquor license. Renovation work on the building will begin in the fall.

In other Council business:

•Work continues on two small water leaks at the Waste Water plant, reported Jon Nordsving.

•Needed street repairs were discussed, with Mayor Donivee Johnson recommending the Council consider the establishment of a Street Improvement Fund at some future point for anticipated projects.

•A liquor license was approved for Canton’s “Day Off” celebration scheduled for August 16th, 17th and 18th.

•Other town maintenance items—including the recent painting of the gazebo, the decision to put wood chips in the park next spring, and the placement of new windows in the Town Hall (as part of the Rockwell grant) in October, were also discussed. An effort will be made in September to recruit volunteers for the window project.
