As we continue to strive to provide our readers with a better quality product, there are so many elements that go into news production today versus years ago.

For example, we have to be concerned with how we present content on our newspaper website, but also on our Facebook page, YouTube channel, Twitter, and any other opportunity that may arise.

And, this is why I am happy to see that as our company continues to evolve, so does our team of talent.

Today, our reporters are becoming more integrated with content presentation opportunities. We have reporters shoot videos, taking loads of photos, and sharing all of this information with a variety of media resources.

And, while we haven’t necessarily set out to make this a mission or objective, it has just naturally happened on an individual basis.

In particular, I’d like to take a moment to recognize two individuals on our team who have harnessed these opportunities.

Mitchell Walbridge has transitioned from a freelance reporter to the position of Assistant Editor for the Fillmore County Journal and Olmsted County Journal. While still attending college, he has already proven he can balance a hectic work and school schedule. In addition, he is extremely involved in the community, through church, Fountain Trail Days, and other volunteer opportunities. We are fortunate to have him leading communications with our news teams in both counties.

Additionally, I would like to recognize Barb Jeffers. She started out covering a few news stories here and there, and then eventually took her photography skills to a professional level with incredible shots of the Fillmore County area. If you’ve visited the Fillmore County Journal Facebook Page, you’ll see Barb’s work all over the place. And, her photos have attracted a lot of attention. Due to Barb’s unique gift, I am recognizing her in our newspaper as our dedicated Photo Journalist.

In general, we have an extremely talented team in all areas -- editorial, production, and sales.

While many newspapers compare themselves to other media on a regular basis, I believe it is important to establish your own personal benchmarks. Compete with yourself. How can we be better? We need to keep asking ourselves that question.
