It’s time to start taking care of what we have...

To the Editor,

I agree with Lori Peterson, “It’s time…to start taking care of what we have - our kids…” It’s unfortunate, however, that there exists such a negative attitude by some, as to how best to provide for our kids.

Several years ago, when the senior class was polled as to what changes they would like to see in our community, approximately 75 percent of the seniors said, “We need a new school.”

As I read comments in the local papers belittling the efforts of our superintendent and school board, I question how pro-education this community really is. I’m thankful we have people who have stepped forward in the past and of recent times, who have really had the best interests of our children at heart. People who have tried (unsuccessfully) to provide them with something other than an aged building, which is in great need of more room, major upgrades and better parking.

I’m also thankful for our great grandparents who sacrificed and did all they could to give us the facilities that we have had the last 100 or more years. Nothing however lasts forever. Are we still driving our first car? Do we drive on the original roads? When we have a serious medical problem, do we just let it go?

Remember how we all worked together in 2007 and beyond, when the floods did such destruction to property, possessions, homes and school? Had the negativity existed back then, which we hear and read about now, little would have been accomplished. Yes, we DO need to seriously and positively take care of some our most precious assets, our future work force, caregivers and leaders. They ARE worth sacrificing for!

Imagine if we all had voted YES on the 2002 referendum - how much further ahead we would be today!
