As college students are counting down the days to campus move-in day, 18 of Preston, Minnesota’s finest are one step closer to receiving their scholarships from the Preston Veteran’s Scholarship Fund.

The Preston Veteran’s Scholarship program has been around since 1996 after it was initiated by Dave Wilson and Dave Sikkink, both who served as the commanders of the Preston post at the time. Since its initiation the scholarship program has grown significantly. Now more than two individuals manage the scholarship fund. A group of seven or eight members including directors, a secretary and a treasurer partake on the scholarship committee each year.

The scholarship process is simple, applicants who have a member of their family with some military background are eligible. Recipients must attend either a two year, four year or technical college and complete their first semester.

Upon completion of their first semester, grades must be submitted for review by a committee member. By the beginning of the second semester, generally by December or January, scholarship recipients receive their $500 if all qualifications are fulfilled.

Since the program began, the Preston Veteran’s Scholarship Fund has given out more than $90,000 worth of financial aid to a couple hundred students. When it began in the mid 1990’s, it was typical that three scholarships would be distributed each year. Now, a substantially greater amount are awarded each year.

The scholarship fund gets its support from both individual donors and businesses. “We’re so grateful for those in our community, including the businesses, for all of their generosity,” said Mary Sikkink. Individual and business donors do get an opportunity to choose a recipient to support on their behalf.

Paying for college today can be a challenge for many as tuition rates burden college graduates for years, even after an educational career has ended. Opportunities like the Preston Veteran’s Scholarship provide help to so many continuing their post-high school education.
