In a little over one month Chatfield’s athletic and activities director, Dan Schindler, has made significant changes in the management of oversight of the Chatfield School District’s extracurricular programs. Along with the help of school board activities committee members and administrators, a coaching evaluation system is in effect and modifications to the activities have been approved.

In a report to the school board at the July 16 regular monthly meeting, Schindler explained that the coach evaluations are just a piece of the puzzle that will improve the district’s programs and will help the coaches themselves. Schindler said that there were holes in the communication between coaches and administrators, holes that will be attempted to be patched with the new guidelines and oversight practices.

New protocols will require pre-season and post-season meetings with all of the head coaches. Evaluations will be discussed with coaches at the post-season meetings after observation is made during the playing seasons. Coaching development plans will also be developed with coaching staff. Coaches will also be sending out weekly updates to parents.

Athletic and activities reform in Chatfield expands to more than just the coaches, however. A meeting with parents and athletes is set for July 24 at 6:30pm. This will give parents and athletes a chance to meet with the athletic/activities director and their coaches. Also, parents and activities participants will have opportunities to complete surveys on their extracurricular experiences.

Other Business

In consent items the board approved several resignations including the retirement of custodian Kermit Wendt, the retirement of custodian Robert Drogemuller, head boys track coach Chris Heppding, and paraprofessional Tim Hebrink.

The board also approved the hiring of Dave Hinck as a social studies instructor and yearbook advisor, Sue Tangen as Valleyland coordinator, Laura Adams as junior class advisor, Erin Banks as ADSIS K-1 reading researcher, Jolene Dornack as first grade instructor, Jodie Daniels as sixth grade instructor, and Matt Davidson as ninth grade boys basketball coach.

In new business the board approved the cancer fundraiser proposal. Alexandra Duxbury and others would like to commit to carrying out fundraisers throughout the school year to raise money for cancer victims. The Taher food service contract was renewed for the 2013-2014 school year. Donations from the 2012-2013 school year totaling $46,897.00 were recognized.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for August 19, 2013 at 7pm in the Chatfield High School media center.
