Thanks to a Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s (SMIF) Reading Encourages Academic Development Grant Program (R.E.A.D.), Semcac Head Start was the recipient of 350 high-quality children’s books funded by the Pearson Foundation. The Semcac Head Start project called “Leap into Summer Literacy,” aims to strengthen parental awareness of early literacy needs including communication and language development. At the end of the school year, each family received a summer literacy activity bag accompanying the book, which included items such as pencils and pencil sharpener, erasers, crayons, a notebook, glue sticks and safety scissors.

Parents play a key role in the project. They received educational information regarding reading to their young children, ideas for building safe summer habits with their children, tips on food safely when eating outdoors and a summer calendar featuring weekly ideas to keep their children learning and moving during the summer months. Semcac Head Start’s mission is Building bright futures by educating young children and empowering their families and communities. Thank you SMIF for supporting our mission with these books that have become a part of each Head Start family’s home library! For more information or to apply for services, please call 507-864-7741.
