At its July 10 meeting the Canton City Council reviewed reports of recent storms and heavy run-off that created flooding issues at the town’s sewer plant, a situation that will require inspection of local manhole covers. “We actually handled those storms pretty well,” said Jon Nordsving, town engineer, “but inspecting and repairing, in some cases replacing, those covers, and reviewing our sump pump ordinances with the public, will help prepare us for future events.” Funds from the League of Minnesota Cities will be used for recent storm repairs.

Other business:

Equipment in Canton’s main park has been inspected and approved by the DNR, although some handicapped accessibility issues still need to be addressed.

A liquor license was approved for the American Legion/Fire Department dance on July 20 at the Town Hall.

A Joint Powers Agreement with the City of Canton on behalf of its City Attorney and Police Department was approved.

Bids will be solicited for the sale of the Town Liquor Store; those bids will be included in a “sealed bid” process that hopefully will be concluded by September. Bidding will be on the property only. Nine parties have shown interest in the property so far.

The issue of an increasing number of lawns on private properties being mowed by the city (due to property neglect) was discussed. A motion was passed to raise the rate of those services to $65 an hour (plus administrative costs) to prompt compliance.

The new windows for the Town Hall—from the Rockwell Grant—have arrived. Volunteers are needed to help with installation. A date for that project will be announced soon.
