The Laura Ingalls Wilder Park and Museum is pleased to announce the candidates for this year's Little Miss Laura contest. They are alphabetically, Rose Gullekson of Decorah, daughter of Justin Gullekson; Katelyn Leiran of Waterville, daughter of Steve and Nancy Leiran; Rylea Nagel of Waukon, daughter of Craig and Shawn Nagel and Emma Rolfs of Decorah, daughter of Charlie and Amy Rolfs. The girls each submitted an essay about Laura for the judges to review, developed a costume and at Laura Days on Saturday morning, June 26, will go before the judges to answer questions. The new Little Miss Laura and Alternate Little Miss Laura will be announced Saturday afternoon following the pie auction around 2:00 p.m.
There are many fun Laura Day activities on Saturday morning. They include the Wilder 5K run at 8:00 a.m. (see lauraingallswilder.us for pre-registration form), the children's Pedal Powered Tractor Pull at 10 a.m., and at 10:30 a.m. the All Ages Checkers Tournament and Spelling Bees will start.
Author Mary Jeffries will act as the school marm and conduct the selling bees. After each session she'll have for sale copies of her "Little House Social Studies Curriculum." This guide utilizes Laura's books to bring 19th century America into the classroom and is a wonderful home schooling reference as well.
The "Treasured Stories" parade begins at noon with entries from around the area. Entries can still register by emailing, adrian@firstlutherandecorah.org and sharing the type of entry you have.
At 1:00 p.m., you'll enjoy the humor and treasured stories of author and illustrator, Cheryl Harness. She has illustrated various publications about Laura. Recently Cheryl released the Laura Ingalls Wilder Coloring Book. Another of her books called, "GRAB HOLD of the PAST, How Understanding the PAST Adds Sparkle and Depth to Your Life in the Present, Can Enrich your FUTURE and Very Possibly SAVE the WORLD!" offers powerful and humorous insights into how we can be citizens with vision and purpose.
Following Cheryl's presentation and as a prelude to the announcement of the 2010 Little Miss Laura and Alternate, 12 tasty pies will be available for bid at the pie auction. The afternoon activities will be capped with craft and pioneer demonstrations with some hands on opportunities, children's games, and the enticing music of Done Doin' Laundry.
Sunday you are invited to join together with the Burr Oak community in holding an ecumenical worship service at 10:00am with special music by Curtis and Linda Gjere. A community wide potluck meal will be held after the service and then the raffle drawings will conclude the 2010 Laura Days.
During the weekend there will also be special evening musical presentations for the adults at Barney's Bar and Grill on Friday, June 25th with DJ Dewey and Saturday, June 26th with Mike McAbee. Both events will run from 9 p.m. to midnight.
