WINONA, Minn., June 12, 2013 – Winona Health earned a Hospital Safety Score of “A” from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update (spring 2013) to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM. The A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals are based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents and infections.

“We’re committed to safety for every patient, every day,” said Kathleen Lanik, Winona Health’s chief quality and safety officer. “Safety is nonnegotiable, and we continuously evaluate and improve our processes to ensure the highest level of quality and safety.”

Compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.

In the latest Hospital Safety Score update, of the 2,514 general hospitals issued a Hospital Safety Score, 780 earned an “A,” 638 earned a “B,” 932 earned a “C,” 148 earned a “D” and 16 earned an “F.”
