Lanesboro, Minn. – Summertime art classes! Lanesboro Arts Center is introducing a new opportunity for weekly arts creation for students just finishing grades 1-6 (actually, older students and adults are welcome, too!). ‘Surprise Sculpture’ will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 12–2pm at the St. Mane Theatre beginning June 11. The class runs six weeks: June 11, 18, 25, and July 2, 9, and 16. Participation in ‘Surprise Sculpture’ is free! Students can attend one or more sessions, dropping in as schedules permit. Bring a sack lunch! Each class will begin with brainstorming and a description of the steps needed to complete the project, during which time students can eat together.

Each week, with the guidance of Lanesboro Arts Center staff and volunteers, students will work together to create different large sculpture projects using recycled and upcycled materials. At the end of each session, students will help to place the sculptures at various locations in Lanesboro, left there to ‘surprise’ public audiences.

The class is open to students from throughout the region, and participation is free. ‘Surprise Sculpture’ is intended to give youth an active outlet in which to work together to create art, encouraging creativity during the summer months.

The St. Mane Theatre is located at 206 Parkway Ave N in Lanesboro, Minn. Contact Sara, Courtney or Dia at Lanesboro Arts Center with questions about ‘Surprise Sculpture’: 507-467-2446. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. The Lanesboro Arts Center’s mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
