The Grand Opening for the Old Bank Art Gallery in Whalan, Minn. will be June 22, 2013, from 1:00 – 5:00. The Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30. The public is warmly welcome.

The current gallery pieces are by all four retired Gilbert siblings. Opening a gallery in the old bank has received enthusiastic response. Visitors are often interested in the old vault and a bit of history about the building.

Elaine creates jewelry and loves to tramp through woods and ditches near her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, collecting ‘weeds’ and flowers to arrange in old vases and picture frames.

Diane worked with youth theatres in Rochester, Minn. making puppets and masks, so creating stories with figures is a natural progression. She uses clay, wire and stripes of cloth and resides in Whalan.

Leon is a wood turner from Santa Rosa, Calif. He turns many varieties of wood into bowls, platters, vases, wine bottle stoppers and mug lids. His latest piece is a beautiful urn for pet ashes.

Ivan, from Arden Hills, Minn. creates tree sculptures with copper wire. The foliage is created by several methods to suggest different types of trees. He does commissions and has exhibited in many art shows in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

As the gallery moves forward , there will be opportunity for other artists to show and/or sell their art. Demonstrations and mini classes are being considered for future weekends. Check Lanesboro.com/Arts and Culture/Galleries for special events or contact Diane, 507-467-2535, dmknigh@gmail.com.
