Habitat for Humanity Winona – Fillmore County invites you to a community celebration to welcome the Teri Root family to their new home. On Monday, June 17 at 5:30 pm, volunteers, Habitat for Humanity representatives, members of the community and the excited partner family will gather at 165 Niagara Court in Harmony, Minn. to honor the hard work, the generous financial backing and the community support that made this home possible. A brief program is planned for 5:30 pm The homebuyer—Teri Root and her children—are more than a little eager to move into their new home. She has completed 300 hours of “sweat equity,” helping to build the home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. They will repay the zero-interest mortgage over a period of 30 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”

Immediately following the dedication, volunteers and donors who have supported this house in Harmony during the last two years are invited for a Volunteer Appreciation and friends of Habitat picnic serving brats, hot dogs and root beer floats.

“This dedication opens a new door for the Root family. The volunteers, donors and other supporters who will be on hand to recognize and celebrate the positive change this home will bring to this family are in for a real treat. A special presentation of a hand-signed quilt will be made to the Root family. The quilt has been signed by hundreds of area community members and sewn and quilted by area friends of Habitat. This celebration will be a wonderful opportunity to congratulate the Root family and to say thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who have made the dream of homeownership a reality for the Root family. We are delighted that this family will be able to spend the summer getting settled into their new home,” said Megan Grebe, Community Development Coordinator, Habitat for Humanity Winona -Fillmore Counties.

Homeowner Teri Root said, “For my family and me this isn’t just a house, it’s helping us move forward in our lives; a place for us all to call home, a place to watch my children grow, a place for us all to prosper! This has been an amazing experience for us, not only watching the process of building a home, but knowing that we have played a part in most every aspect of the building process with the community.”

Habitat for Humanity-Winona County built its first home in 1994. A total of 46 homes have been constructed. In addition to the 25 homes within the city of Winona, Minn., Habitat has built homes in Lewiston, Minn., St. Charles, Minn., Minnesota City, Minn., Altura, Minn., Rushford, Minn. and Stockton, Minn.
