Mary E. “Bette” Barrett

Mary E. “Bette” Barrett, age 85, of Harmony, MN died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 5, at 11:00 am at the Nativity Catholic Church in Harmony with Fr. James VonTobel S.J. officiating. Interment will follow at St. Ligouri Cemetery, rural Preston, MN. Friends may call from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm Tuesday at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony.

Bette was born May 4, 1928 on the family farm in Carimona Township, Fillmore County, the daughter of J. Clifford and Mary (O’Connor) Gossman. She graduated from Preston High School in 1946. She worked in Patient Registration at Methodist Hospital in Rochester where she met her future husband Everett “Don” Barrett. They were married on November 20, 1947 in South Bend, Indiana They first lived in South Bend, Indiana and then in rural Preston for a short time. In the early 1950s they moved to Harmony where they spent the rest of their lives. In February 2013, Betty moved to Traditions Assisted Living in Preston, MN.

Bette was a long time member of Nativity Catholic Church, volunteer EMT, enjoyed watching football on tv, going to “The Boat”, playing Gin Rummy and going dancing with Don. Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bette is survived by ten children: Bill Barrett, Jim Barrett, Pat (Vinson) Mathison, Trudy Barrett (daughter-in-law), Rosie (Larry) Scrabeck, Peggy Barrett, Kathy (John) Heibel, Jackie (Kip) Johnson, Don (Julie) Barrett, Dave Barrett (Vicky Broughton) and Sandy (Steve) Ristau; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four siblings: Alice Pott, Bob Gossman, Franny Thene and Vince (Joyce) Gossman; two sister-in-laws: Eleanor Gossman and Marty Gossman; a brother-in-law: Bill Verdick; her husband’s sisters: Shirley Crosby, Rosemary Hesser, Nadine Huston. Bette is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett Donald Barrett; a son, John E. Barrett Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Marlys Barrett; three brothers and 4 sisters.
