Preston’s Trout Days kicks off town festival season

After a prolonged anticipation for spring and warmer weather, Preston began the summer festival season with Trout Days. Running from Friday, May 17 through the entire weekend, Trout Days provided many activities that were enjoyed by the public including a fishing contest, the 23rd annual Car/Street Rod Show, the Trout Days Grand Parade, a fireworks display, the Preston Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament, and much more.

On Friday the Preston Area Golf Course hosted a kick off for the weekend events. Also the JuliaClaire Relay for Life Rummage Sale and music by “DJ Guido” took place. Saturday had a wide variety of events including the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast, citywide garage sales, a co-ed volleyball tournament, Chicken Bar-B-Que by the Preston Servicemen’s Club, and the Root River Art Show and Book Sale at the Preston Public Library.

On Saturday the 27th annual fishing contest, headquartered in the National Trout Center in Preston, took place. Prizes were given to the first, second, and third place winners. Competitors had their entries judged by weight. This year’s champion was Gary Faber whose prize winning trout weighed in at 3 pounds, 4.3 ounces, measuring 20 inches in length. Faber’s cash prize was $200. Each participant was also entered in a raffle drawing for prizes.

This year’s Grand Parade, which also took place on Saturday, had more than 55 units. Many of the parade units were from the hosting community of Preston but also from neighboring communities such as Lanesboro, Rushford, Chatfield, Mabel, Harmony, Fountain, Wykoff, and more. the grand marshals for the parade were Walter and Mary Lou Hansen.

An afternoon of fun continued after the parade, including a kids’ tractor pedal pull. A total of 79 children participated in the tractor pedal pull.

Age 7: 1st: Hunter Schellsmidt; 2nd: Madison Lea; 3rd: Cody Fett

Age 8: 1st: Becca Mohlis; 2nd: Skylar Krenzelok; 3rd: Dillon O’Connor

Age 9: 1st: Addy Hershberger; 2nd: Josh Bissen; 3rd: Krisie Bret

Age 10: 1st: Braden Greibrock; 2nd: Pheonix Holder; 3rd: Nolan Breusex

Age 11: 1st: Hunter Benson; 2nd: Kelsey Biel; 3rd: Ian Schupe

Saturday ended with a fireworks display from the south hill in Preston and a street dance with the band “Time Machine” for the musical entertainment.

Trout Days wrapped up on Sunday, but not before the Preston Chamber Golf Tournament could take place. The winners for this year’s tournament were (listed by Team Captain):

Championship - 1. Trenton Hyland; 2. Brett Grabau; 3. Dwayne Wingness.

1st Flight - 1. Drew Bahl; 2. Dick Irish; 3. Mike Clark.

2nd Flight - 1. Kyle Tollefson; 2. Randy Haakenson; 3. Brian Benson.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions the tractor pull had to be cancelled this year.

Anyone who attended Preston Trout Days would say it was a great start to the summer festival season.
