What comes to mind when you think of the Fourth of July? Hopefully the birth of our great country, the United States of America. Do you also think fireworks? Picnics? Family gatherings? Another thing many people of our area equate with July 4th is the Whalan Fastpitch Softball Tournament. This year, our 35th annual, will be held Saturday, July 3rd, Sunday, July 4th and Monday, July 5th. Ten fastpitch teams from the tri-state area will vie for cash and trophies.
Fastpitch is a game which seems to be passed on from generation to generation. Fathers who played in this tournament years ago now come to watch their sons and even their grandsons play. It is also a time to renew relationships with old ballplayers and other friends. Fellowship and good food, as well as some top notch fastpitch, are the three things that draw large crowds to this event.
Games begin each day at 9:00 a.m. and continue until about 6:00 p.m. We start serving our popular Egg McWhalans about 8:00 a.m. and follow up with hot turkey sandwiches, brats, hot dogs and lots of other food throughout the day. Tickets are $2.00 in advance or $3.00 at the gate - your ticket allows you entry for all three days. What a deal!
All proceeds from this tournament go to Whalan Lutheran Church.
