Minnesota Skateboarding Millennial Has High-Flying, Hip Business

June 2010, Saint Paul, Minnesota: Most 17-year-old skateboarders have enough trouble juggling schoolwork, hanging with friends and finding awesome places to test their boards. Dennis Nelson, a junior in high school from Saint Paul, Minnesota, decided he wanted another challenge. So he added entrepreneurship to the mix.

In 2008, Nelson merged his passion for skating with his natural artistic abilities. The result? HighFly Clothing, an exclusive skateboarding and snowboarding apparel shop for men and women, all designed by Nelson.

"I didn't like most of the skateboarding clothing out there," Nelson explains. "It so obviously wasn't made by skaters. The vibe was all wrong. So I designed T-shirts and hats with real skaters and snowboarders in mind - a little crazy, a little 'out there', a little in-your-face... It's stuff my friends and I would want to wear when we're skating."

With the help of an insanely dedicated partner, a team of supportive fans (including a wacky Yeti with a penchant for texting), Nelson's signature line of HighFly Clothing items rapidly took flight, especially among skaters and boarders alike. "Our clothes are on skaters and boarders all over the country and across both sides of the ocean," says Nelson. "HighFly Clothing is starting to travel the globe."

Over the next year and especially as the end of high school nears, Nelson expects to spend more time creating new designs for the site's line of shirts, hoodies, hats and more. He notes, "I've been bit by the entrepreneur bug. There's no way I'd ever do anything except be my own boss. It's tons of hard work, but it's my passion."
