HFH Winona & Fillmore Counties searching for dedicated individual to help build capacity

Winona, MN (April 24, 2013) – Habitat for Humanity-Winona-Fillmore Counties is currently recruiting several VISTAs to join the global movement to build simple, decent and affordable housing in partnership with people in need. The Winona affiliate was selected as one of only 11 Habitat affiliates (out of 32 Habitat affiliates statewide) to host 2013-2014 VISTA members. Since 1994 HFH Winona-Fillmore Counties has completed 46 homes in partnership with low-income working families. To increase the number of families served each year and number of houses built, HFH Winona-Fillmore is currently recruiting for a year long Communications Coordinator position that serves both the Habitat affiliate and the Winona Habitat ReStore.

Habitat for Humanity year-long VISTA members work on projects designed to increase the organizational capacity of local Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Positions begin July 30th, 2013 and end August 2nd, 2014. VISTA members recruit and coordinate volunteers, raise funds and secure in-kind donations, start new programs, and conduct outreach and marketing campaigns. Last year, Habitat for Humanity VISTA members statewide recruited and coordinated more than 2,650 volunteers who contributed over 15,400 hours of their time to Habitat for Humanity statewide. In addition, Habitat VISTA members secured over $50,700 in in-kind donations and $365,100 in grants and monetary donations. Not only has this statewide impact benefited local affiliates, it has helped more families fulfill the dream for simple, decent and affordable homeownership throughout Minnesota.

Administered and funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service

(CNCS), AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program, which provides people of all ages the opportunity to serve with a community organization. Year-long VISTA members receive a modest living allowance of $946-$983 per month (depending on location), health benefits and student loan deferment. In addition, after completing the one-year service commitment, VISTA members can choose to receive either a cash stipend of $1,500 or an education award of $5,550 to be used for tuition or student loans.

“We have been so fortunate to have some truly excellent VISTA members who have brought great skills to our Habitat affiliate. They have infused our affiliate with new energy and passion. It’s a great learning experience for the VISTA and it’s truly amazing what a VISTA member can accomplish in only a year. Our VISTA member this last year has done a great job of helping us evaluate our current communications, increase our use of social media and help facilitate the creation of a new website for our organization. We can hardly wait to see who comes our way for the 2013-2014 VISTA term,” said Nancy Iglesias, HFH Winona-Fillmore Counties Executive Director.

HFH Winona-Fillmore Habitat for Humanity is now actively recruiting for the year-long Communications Coordinator position. To learn more about this position or to apply, visit www.habitatwinona.org. VISTA positions are filled on a rolling basis, so interested candidates should apply today. The application deadline for the year-long Communications Coordinator VISTA applications is May 8th, 2013.
