Congratulations, people of Fillmore County. Thanks to hundreds of you, the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection was a great success. If you were one of the participants that waited in line to drop off your "donations," you know there were a lot of people wanting to get rid of their hazardous waste. I am frequently asked how much stuff is collected on a day such as this. Paint is, by far, the most common form of hazardous waste we receive. Twenty large boxes measuring 4X4X4 were filled with cans containing unwanted paint. To give you some idea of how much that really is, these paint cans alone would more than fill three dump trucks. Aerosol cans, glues, varnishes, and pesticides are also popular products brought to us for proper disposal. Gallons and gallons of antifreeze, gasoline, and diesel fuel were collected as well. We usually get some gopher poison, ant poison, lawn fertilizer, tar, and moth balls. Only one mercury thermometer was turned into us this time. Hopefully most of them are out of your houses and replaced by a much safer product.

While I distributed surveys and directed traffic, I had the opportunity to chat with many of you concerning solid waste (garbage) and recycling in general. Most of the participants of Household Hazardous Waste Day have dropped items off for many years. About ten percent told me this was the first time they were visiting us. There were many questions concerning the disposal of waste oil, batteries, appliances, and outdated medicine. I will be sharing information concerning these topics in future articles.

A Fall Household Hazardoous Waste Collection is scheduled for October 5, 2010, at the Resource Recovery Center in Preston. Make a note of this on your calendar now so you will not miss this opportunity to make a donation or two to in this program. Once again, the hours will be NOON to 5 p.m. It's not too early to start looking for that nasty stuff around the house that you really don't want or need to have there.
