Benson will speak on “The Future Ain’t What it Used to Be”. He is a Commissioner for the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority appointed in July 2012. Duane Benson is also a local Lanesboro area cattle farmer and former Minnesota Senator from 1980 to 1994. During his tenure in the Senate he served as the Senate Minority Leader for a period during that time.

Benson was the Executive Director of the Minnesota Early Learning Foundation from 2005 through 2011. He also was the Executive Director of the Minnesota Business Partnership from 1994 to 2003. He graduated with honors from Hamline University and was drafted into the NFL. He played eleven seasons as a linebacker for the Oakland Raider, Atlanta Falcons, and the Houston Oilers.

Benson is active in numerous civic and charitable organizations and serves as a Trustee of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. He is a 2009 laureate of the Junior Achievement Upper Midwest Business Hall of Fame.

In addition, the event will feature a silent and live auction. Cost for the evening is $35 with tickets available at F & M Community Bank or Weber & Judd Pharmacy both in Preston.

Funds raised during the evening will be placed in the Foundation’s endowment fund. The interest earned on the endowment fund is then granted to local non-profit organizations for helping them finance special projects. Recent grant recipients have included the Fillmore Central daycare program, the National Trout Center, the area Audubon Society for the swift breeding tower at the Trailhead, and the Preston Historical Society for additional caboose remodeling. Additional applications are welcomed by the Foundation for future grants.
