REP. DAVIDS AUTHORS BILL TO PROTECT FAMILY FARMS

ST. PAUL – Keeping a farm in the family is important to many rural Minnesota landowners, and State Representative Greg Davids (R-Preston) is co-authoring legislation that would help achieve this goal.
“In some cases in Fillmore and Houston counties, farms have been passed along to sons and daughters for generations,” Davids said.
“Ending this practice would truly be a tragedy, which is why I’ve joined this bipartisan effort to protect the family farm.”
Davids’ bill would conform Minnesota’s estate law with that of the federal government. Under the proposal, the value of the property that could be kept within the family would total $5 million.
As tax chair in 2011, Davids passed estate law legislation that also assisted farmers and small business owners. Now he is working with the chair of the House Agriculture Policy Committee to make these needed legislative changes.
“The bill would allow more land to be kept in the family name upon death of the owner, so long as that land is used for agricultural
purposes,” Davids concluded.
