DECORAH, Iowa – Be swept away to a smoky 1930s Paris jazz club by the seductive sounds of Hot Club's gypsy swing as The Hot Club of San Francisco presents their sometimes flamboyant, sometimes melancholy gypsy jazz ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 15 in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther College campus.
Tickets for the performance can be purchased at the Luther Box Office, (563) 387-1357, open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11a.m.-3 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m.-3p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Tickets, on sale Feb. 21, are $23, $21 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and can also be purchased online at http://www.boxoffice.luther.edu.
The Hot Club of San Francisco is grounded in the pioneering style of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli's Quintette du Hot Club de France. The quintet, founded in France in 1934 by Reinhardt and Grappelli, combines elements of Gypsy culture, American jazz and the musically fertile scene of Paris in the 1920s. Today, there are Hot Clubs in honor of the famous quintet around the world in Norway, Tokyo, San Francisco and New York to name a few.
During the first half of the performance, the music will portray "Postcards from Gypsyland" and during the second half, Hot Club will color the vintage silent film "The Mascot," an adventure story about lost toys, with their unique and humorous accompaniment.
The group offers a fitting homage to this sophisticated music while adding their own refreshing energy on guitar, violin, bass and voice.
The quintet includes Paul Mehling, guitar; Evan Price, violin; Isabelle Fontaine, guitar and voice; Jeff Magidson, guitar and Clint Baker, bass.
