Root River program to get new Occupational Therapy services

Michelle Breitsprecher, Director of the Root River Program, spoke to the Fillmore Central School Board at their regular meeting on Feb. 26. She stated they had been receiving Occupational Therapy services from Southland for five days a month, but that has ended. They are currently looking at options to acquire services elsewhere. The Autism Specialist they currently have is also an Occupational Therapist, so they have extended her contract for now. They have checked with Stanley Jones and Associates in Rochester, and also Harmony Healthcare in Harmony. Harmony Healthcare is interested in partnering with the school to offer their OT services. Breitsprecher said they are getting quotes right now.
Personnel
The board approved the resignation of Ryan Scheevel as the Summer Rec. Director. They also approved the resignation of Christina Bothun as the ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) Parent Educator, and Jaslyn Kramer from One Block at a Time daycare.
Additional spring sports coaches were approved. Head coaches had been approved at a previous meeting. David Broadwater will be coaching B-squad baseball, Kyle Rundquist 8th grade baseball, and John Holger 7th grade baseball. For softball, Mensink said there are good numbers this year, with 16 signed up for grades 9-12. Travis Malley was approved for 8th grade softball, and Jessie Powell for 7th grade softball. Aaron Mensink will coach Junior High boys golf.
The board approved an open enrollment request for a student living in Wykoff. Jackie Whitacre was also approved as the spring play director.
Principal and Dean Reports
Dean Chris Mensink reported that Katrina Bergey tied for 15th in the individual round at the Math Wizards competition. There was a Father-Daughter dance on Feb. 11 that had over 100 girls attend, and the 1st graders had their VIP lunch on Feb. 15. February is I Love to Read month, and the students have been participating in many reading activities.
Principal Heath Olstad said the seniors are getting close to their trip, and the senior raffle went very well. He gave thanks to the community for their continued support. Board member Sue Sikkink commented that the basketball fundraiser for Alex Scrabeck was amazing, and thanked the people who were involved from the community and even surrounding towns.
School Calendar
Superintendent Richard Keith presented the board with a proposed calendar for the 2013-2014 school year, which is much like the calendar for 2012-2013, with the exception of beginning school after Labor Day.
There was some discussion about possibly changing the staff development times. Right now they have one Friday each month the kids are released early to allow for three hours of development time. Keith mentioned that some schools have a one-hour late start each Wednesday instead, but the faculty was not in favor of the idea.
Board member Emily Ellis said she has received comments from parents who were concerned there were too many early outs in one month, and Keith said they would work to make sure those days off were staggered throughout the year.
