HARMONY, Minn. -- What to do with winter rye as the planting season approaches is the topic of a short field day Saturday, March 16, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at the hog farm of Travis Willford southeast of Harmony. The event is free, though an RSVP is appreciated to guarantee coffee and a roll: contact Caroline van Schaik at 507-523-3366 or caroline@landstewardshipproject.org. Willford’s farm is located at 33568 County 30 at the southern edge of Fillmore County.

Willford, a member of the Fillmore County Soil and Water Resources District Board of Directors, will talk about his use of winter rye as a cover crop planted after soybeans and prior to corn. This is his second year working with a cover crop. Participants will take a look at the rye in the field, and hear how it can be killed under tillage and no-till conditions, with and without the use of chemicals.

Other topics to be addressed include the relation between cover crops and healthy soil, other cover crops that work well in the region, and cultural practices necessary for success in integrating cover crops into a field rotation.

The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) and Fillmore County Soil and Water Resources District (SWCD) are organizing this free event in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. Funding is provided in part by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Winrock International.
