LANESBORO, MINN. —The Commonweal Theatre Company proudly presents the capstone production of the 2013 Apprentice Company, Miss Julie by August Strindberg, in a new translation by Ethan Bjelland. Performances run March 21 through March 30, with an encore performance during the 16th Annual Ibsen Festival on Sunday, April 14 at 11am. Call the box office at (800)657-7025 or order tickets online at www.CommonwealTheatre.org.

Strindberg’s captivating play follows an adventurous noblewoman and an ambitious servant as they struggle against societal expectations of their respective ranks. In pursuit of their dreams, the two vie for control and become entangled in a cycle of love and lust, domination and subservience that may ultimately be their downfall. Commonweal Resident Ensemble Member Scott Dixon will direct; previous Commonweal directorial credits for Mr. Dixon include last season’s A Christmas Carol, Ice Maidens (2008), and An Enemy of the People (2011). “Miss Julie is a passionate story about passionate people who cross the line one summer night and find their world has completely changed,” says Dixon. “Now they must decide whether to go further into this new world with all its new hopes and new fears or try to find a way to go back if that’s even possible.”

The 2013 Apprentice Company includes Katie Berger, Ethan Bjelland, Ana Hagedorn, and Paul Steffens—all were seen on the Commonweal main stage during the 2012 season.

The cast is comprised of Hagedorn in the title role of Miss Julie, Steffens appearing as the servant Jean, and Berger rounding out the show as Kristin, the cook. Bjelland serves in the critical roles of translator, adaptor, and stage manager. The set, costumes, and props are also handled by the four apprentices with the help of annual Commonweal company member Gary Danciu on sound design and a guest lighting designer.

The Commonweal Theatre’s Apprentice Program is a ten-month commitment designed for recent college graduates or young professionals with commensurate experience who would benefit from a prolonged relationship with a small professional theatre company. Focused primarily on experiential learning through a traditional mentor/apprentice relationship, the program affords artistic opportunities, regular classroom instruction, and administrative responsibilities in the areas of Marketing, Development, and Production.

Funding for Commonweal Theatre’s programming is provided in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, grants from the McKnight Foundation and the Shubert Foundation, and private funders.

Miss Julie has a limited run of 8 shows. All performances are at the Commonweal Theatre, 208 Parkway Avenue North in downtown Lanesboro. Tickets are $20. Student discounts are available. For tickets or information about any Commonweal event or programming, call (800)657-7025 or (507)467-2525, or email tickets@commonwealtheatre.org.
