Iron Pour held in Lanesboro July 18-24

Lanesboro, Minnesota will be home to fifteen iron artists the week of July 18-24, in town for residency with the Lanesboro Arts Center - Standard Issue Iron Pour. Artists will come to Lanesboro from throughout the United States. Local artist Karl Unnasch is coordinating the residency, where artists and crew will work on molds at Sylvan Park throughout the week. The Iron Pour will take place on Saturday, July 24, from 12-5 p.m. The public is invited to watch as 2,700 degree molten iron is transformed on-site! Following the iron pour will be a Community bar-b-que from 5-8 p.m. with the artists; donations will support Lanesboro Arts Center programming.
Other Iron Pour events include a "Create your own Iron Plaque" workshop led by Karl Unnasch, held on Thursday, July 22 from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, July 24 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Participants will complete a scratch block mold ready for the iron pour in either of the 2-hour sessions (it is not necessary to attend both sessions). The scratch block process entails the participant carving a reverse relief into an existing sand mold blank (any imagery and text is possible and tools and professional assistance will be made available). All ages are encouraged to participate. There will be a fee for each 2-hour workshop; register in advance at Lanesboro Arts Center, 507-467-2446. Completed plaques will be ready for pick-up on Sunday, July 25 at Sylvan Park.
The public is also invited to an Artist Talk and Slide Show on Thursday, July 22, 7:30 p.m. at the St. Mane Theatre, 206 Parkway Ave. N. in Lanesboro. The event is free!
Karl Unnasch directs Standard Issue Cast Metals, which is an art foundry retreat for artists. He exhibits his work nationally and has participated in several major arts residencies. His outreach program brings cast metal and glass sculpture into high schools where he collaborates with art students to make permanent installations for their communities. His experience with reclaimed materials is vast and continues to expand. His studio, Pilot Mound Design, can be found along Hwy 30, east of Chatfield, Minnesota.
The Standard Issue Iron Pour is generously supported by the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council and the City of Lanesboro.
Lanesboro Arts Center has been providing year-round arts programming for more than twenty-five years. Its mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
