June I. Stender, long-time Spring Valley resident, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Seasons Hospice with family at her side.
She and her twin sister, Jean, were born April 10, 1932, in Stewartville, Minn., to Boyd and Helen (Russell) Lenz. She grew up in Wykoff and was baptized, confirmed and married at the Wykoff Methodist Church. After high school, she attended the University of Minnesota. On December 18, 1954, she married Kenneth Stender. They made their first home in Denver and returned to Minnesota in 1956.
June was very involved in school, community and church activities. At Our Savior’s Lutheran (OSL) in Spring Valley, she taught Sunday School and was past WELCA president. In 2012, she retired from the OSL church council, the Lutheran World Relief board (Root River conf.), and as board chair of Spring Valley Senior Living and Nursing Home.
Over the years, she served as an election judge, zoning board member, library board president, SELCO member, Cosmopolitan Club member, and chair of the local chapter of The American Red Cross. She also chaperoned University of Minnesota marching band performances in the UK.
She was an optician and office manager of eye clinics in Spring Valley and Preston for many years. She later founded Verse in Vision, creating custom banners for churches throughout the tri-state area. She also applied her artistic gifts to stained glass, oil paintings and crafts, and was an avid reader.
She is survived by husband, Ken; sister, Jean (Bill) Eickhoff and family; children, Pamela Landgrebe of Racine, Gregory Stender of Spring Valley, Jana Stender (Gary Rice) of Eden Prairie, and Lia (Jon) Hansen of Seattle; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by grandson, Grant Landgrebe; son-in-law, Gary Landgrebe; and sister-in-law, Carla Stender.
A memorial service was held Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, Rev.’s Dennis Timmerman and Laura Fladten co-officiating. Funeral arrangements by Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley.
