Our Team

Sheena Tollefson, the Creative Director for the Fillmore County Journal and Olmsted County Journal, recently attended the Minnesota Newspaper Assocation annual conference in Bloomington, Minn.

At this annual event dedicated to media professionals, she participated in a wide range of seminars covering all sorts of topics.

When she came back to work from this conference, she shared what she learned with our entire team. As a media professional now chalking up my 20th year in the business, it was refreshing for me to hear all of the ideas she brought back from the annual event.

Ultimately, what Sheena brought back to our team reminded me of the importance of continuously investing in the greatest resource of our company -- our employees.

Sheena and her co-workers are the future of our company.

Years ago, a mentor told me that I was the future of the company. He said that someday I would be in a leadership role. I didn’t necessarily want to hear that, for that sounded like a lot of responsibility. And, I couldn’t imagine anyone looking to me for answers. But, somehow I learned the ropes and learned my way.

So, as I look to Sheena and the rest of our wonderful team as we steer the ship together, I am optimistic for a bright future for our company and the people we serve.

Our Students

As I look at the young adults soon to be graduating from our high schools in Fillmore County, I am both encouraged and enlightened by what they will bring to the table.

Every year for the past 14 years, the Fillmore County Journal has coordinated the “Journal Student Writing Project,” involving anywhere from seven to 15 students each school year. This is completely voluntary, and not every school is always represented each year -- by choice of the English Department. In some cases, though, we’ve had some schools with up to eight students participating in the project.

Well, back in 2009, we decided to commit to an annual $500 scholarship to be given away to one of the students participating in the “Journal Student Writing Project.”

We have had students from Rushford-Peterson, Lanesboro and Fillmore Central become recipients of this annual scholarship since its inception in 2009.

This school year, we had a total of four applications for the scholarship. And, let me tell you it was a tough decision for all of our judges (made up of our team at the office).

At the end of the process, Cody Hendrickson prevailed. While it was a close race, all of the judges unanimously voted for Cody Hendrickson to receive the $500 scholarship from the Fillmore County Journal.

While reading today’s Journal, you’ll probably notice a commentary from Cody Hendrickson talking about how his community is unique. This was submitted with Cody’s application. I am particularly enthused that Cody is interested in going into broadcasting or journalism.

We appreciate Cody’s aspirations, and we wish him great success as he graduates to the next level of his life experiences.

Congratulations Cody!
