Dairy Tour near Lewiston July 21

Fri, Jul 2nd, 2010
Posted in Agriculture

Tour Rolling Ridge Acres Dairy and hear from a variety of dairy experts on Wednesday, July 21, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Gary, Paul and Justin Luehmann are hosts for this tour, and you can see their new free-stall barn, pre-fresh barn and double-12 milking parlor. Their 300-cow herd has a 12-month-average somatic cell count of less than 120,000 with recent counts under 90,000.

The theme is "Are We Leaving Money on the Table?" and profitability is the focus. Dr. Jeff Reneau, U of M dairy specialist, will speak on milk quality; the DeLaval activity meter system will be shown by Mark Swenson, Farm Country Coop; nutrition will be covered by Peter Oehler, consultant; milk pasteurizing will be discussed by Bob Schell, DVM. The host family will talk about management and milk marketing strategy.

Although all listed topics will be relevant to the theme of the field day, the presentation and discussion by Dr. Reneau has special significance because of a recent decision by the European Union that beginning October 1, 2010 all exporters of dairy products must certify that every dairy farm from which milk is received must meet a 3-month rolling geometric mean SCC not to exceed 400,000. Minnesota dairy producers who are above this limit will need to quickly make some decisions and adjustments in management practices if they wish to continue producing milk starting this fall.

No pre-registration is necessary. Plastic boots will be required and furnished. Refreshments served, but not lunch. From Kwik Trip in Lewiston, drive 1.6 miles east on US 14. Turn right on Dutchman's Crossing Dr, go 0.3 miles, turn left onto Rolling Ridge Dr. The dairy facilities are on the ridge.
