To the Editor,
It’s disturbing to hear that the rich must have low tax rates while old folks must sacrifice part of their earned benefits. Wealthy lobbying groups, our corporate owned media, and our corporate controlled politicians tell us we must cut Social Security benefits, but they are liars and deceivers. No sir! Let’s increase Social Security benefits. It’s surprisingly easy. We could lift the cap on taxed wages. We could have all income, including capital gains, subject to Social Security taxes. We could have a small financial transaction tax dedicated to the Social Security Trust Fund. We could simply have the general fund make up any future shortfalls in the Trust Fund and if necessary we could cut corporate welfare programs which burden our nation’s finances.
Sen. Franken has promised to only vote for “no cuts” legislation to Social Security. Sen. Klobuchar was non-committal in response to my letter urging “no cuts” to Social Security. Please, Sen. Klobuchar, now is the time for leadership. Support our seniors. And what of the Republicans? They have proposed ending Social Security and Medicare as insurance programs, and instead letting Wall Street and private insurance companies take care of us. When routine recessions arrive, this Wall Street crap shoot will bring financial plague to many seniors and private insurance companies will put profits far ahead of health care.
