Letter about R-P School Board
To the Editor,
December was my last Rushford-Peterson School Board meeting, after serving one four-year term. Neither I nor my family is RP alumni, since we have lived here only 13 years. With this background, I was surprised when people, many who are from here, would say to me that they would never serve. One even said that she would rather serve on City Council before the School Board.
These poor perceptions of what public service entails are unfortunate. Disparaging comments critical of RP School Board made during the referendum on the new school could only feed negative views. Some school communities have difficulty finding people willing to serve. Our community has not come to that point, and, I write to focus attention so that does not happen.
My Board service was a rewarding experience, one that I was privileged to have. No one ever yelled at me, or called me at all hours to complain. The Board meetings were, and continue to be, an open, respectful exchange where all were heard – if they wanted to be. I learned so much.
Public service is an honor that more should try. The rewards, and the shared responsibility to take part, outweigh the downside, even taking into account the criticism, valid or otherwise, that may come from others. Please consider constructive support to all of your publicly elected officials, instead of “armchair quarterbacking.” Or, more important, consider serving in an office, and be a role model of community service for your children, family, and friends.
